James Perry Hargrave married Casandra Clark on 28 September 1848 in Hopkins County. They had four sons named William G., John Carr, Charles Jasper, and James Elliot Hargrave.
Eli Hargrave wrote about James Perry Hargrave describing him as the hub of the community. He operated a store at Sulphur Bluff dealing in general merchandise. He was the post master for a period of time, as well as, the justice of the peace. He was an avid reader of books and newspapers and was known to have a splendid memory. He was a violinist and loved to entertain in his home. He was in favor of education and always active in local politics. He was known as a staunch Democrat.
James Perry Hargrave served in both the War Between the States and the Mexican War.
He died on 1 July 1906 at Nelta, Hopkins County, Texas. He was buried in the Nelta Cemetery.
