Joseph met and married Mary E. Hosenfelt, she was 14 years his junior. They settled in Bollinger Co., Missouri where Joseph took up farming. Mary would give birth to 9 children, with 6 making it to adulthood.
Joseph became a US Citizen on November 5, 1900.
