He was the son of the late William A. and Eleanor Tingley Hammer.
Charles was a high school graduate in Wheaton, MD. He was a master plumber and a gemologist. Charles served in the Army Air Force during World War II.
He was a member of the Gettysburg Moose, Past Master of The Wheaton Masonic Lodge, Wheaton, MD and member of the Grand Masonic Lodge.
Charles was predeceased by his first wife, Aileen Coulter Hammer, who died in 1978, and is survived by his wife Evelyn Cool Hammer. Also surviving are a daughter, Debra H. Richardson of Levittown; a son, Steven D. Hammer of Laurel, MD; four stepsons, James L. Brown of Gettysburg, Roger G. Brown of Gettysburg, Thomas L. Brown of Hanover and Jeffrey S. Brown of New Oxford; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
