Pioneer of County Answers Last Call- Nominee of Party for Second Term
Joseph Martin Elliott, 68 years of age, city treasurer of Logansport, died at his home in 820 North street, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock after a short illness. Death was die to gangrene poisoning which developed from an affection of a corn on his foot. Despite all efforts of physicians to stem the advance of the poison he gradually grew weaker. He lay in a coma for the last forty-eight hours.
"Mart" Elliott as he was familiarly known to hundreds of citizens of Cass county, was a pioneer of Indiana. His father, Joseph Elliott, Sr. came here from Tippecanoe county in 1850, taking up his residence in what is now Harrison township. "Mart" was born there January 13, 1853, the youngest of twelve children. He lived his entire life in this county. He early began to shift for himself. He learned the trade of a horseshoer which he followed for 34 years establishing a reputation for honest work and dependability. In 1904 he entered the livery business in which venture he continued until his election to the office of city treasurer in 1917.
RENOMINATED FOR TREASURER
In the spring primaries this year Mr. Elliott was renominated by the Republicans for a second term without opposition. In 1896 he was the nominee of his party for sheriff of Cass county. He was defeated by but 78 votes though the Democrats carried the county by than 500 that year.
March 14, 1877, Mr. Elliott was (p2) united in marriage to Miss Priscilla Castle. To them four children were born, Blanche, now the wife of Dr. John Bradfield, Harry B. and George M. and Earl, the latter dying in infancy. He was a member of the Masonic order, the knights of Pythias, the Elks and Foresters.
Mr. Elliott was a man who spoke ill of no one and for whom none had but the kindest word. He loved his home and family and left no deed undone or word unsaid that might contribute to the comfort or happiness of any of its members.
Deceased is survived by the widow, one daughter, Mrs. John Bradfield, of this city, two sons, Harry B. Elliott and George M. Elliott of Los Angeles, California, two brothers, Benjamin Elliott of LaMoure, North Dakota, and Elias Elliott of Royal Center and one sister, Mrs. Mary Cooper of Denver, Indiana.
The body will lie in state Tuesday afternoon and evening and Wednesday morning from 10 to 12, when friends may call. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the residence conducted by the Rev. J. S. Corkey of the Calvary Presbyterian church. The funeral will be private. Interment will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery.
