Mr. Abel died March 10, 2009, at Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto in Southaven.
He was born on July 10, 1925, in Carroll County to the late Rhuben Wheeler Abel and Iona Vance Abel.
Mr. Abel was retired from the Memphis plant of Bemis Company, Inc., where he had worked as a machinist. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Carroll County while growing up and attended Southcrest Baptist Church most recently. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
In addition to his parents, preceding Mr. Abel in death is his wife, Johnnie Lula Abel.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia A. Brooks of Horn Lake; two sons, James Wheeler Abel of Collierville and George R. Worsham of Memphis; a sister, Wheeler Katherine Bardo of Grenada; a brother, Cecil Abel of Florence, Miss.; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
National Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
