Benjamin J. Argenti, Sr., 80, of Lorain, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006, at Community Health Partners Hospital, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Aug. 6, 1926, in palmer, Pa., and had lived in Lorain since 1949.

Argenti was employed at Ford's Lorain Assembly Plant for more than 20 years, retiring in 1981. He previously worked for the B&O Railroad for 13 years.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, United Auto Workers Local 425 and Italian-American Veterans Post 1, all in Lorain, and was a life member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars in Uniontown, Pa.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the USS Melvin R. Nawman, USS Chara and USS Leray Wilson as a fireman first class. He received the Pacific Service ribbon with five stars, the American Service and Philippine Liberation ribbons and World War II Victory medal. He enjoyed his grandchildren, working in the yard, mechanics and roses.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Margaret A. (nee Hostetler); sons Benjamin Argenti, Jr. of Lorain, William Argenti of Huron and paul Argenti of Vermillion; daughter Denise Steele of Lorain; brothers William Argetni and August Argenti, both of Lorain; sister, Frances Sobek of Uniontown; and 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace in 1951, his parents, August Argenti and Grace (nee Coville) Argenti; brother, Peter Argenti; and sisters Nellie Tillman and Sara Lake.

Friends may call Friday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Services there Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. Carson Fraley officiating will be followed at 10 a.m. by mass in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Drive, with the Rev. Thomas Smith, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors by VFW post 451 will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
