Born in Pittsfield, VT; died in Canaan, CT
Several pastorates in NY, PA, Winsted, CT and East Canaan, CT. He was preaching in Winsted when he heard about the firing on Fort Sumter. He soon joined the 2nd Regiment as chaplain.
On July 21, 1869, he was captured byt he rebels at Bull Run, VA with a gun in his hand-that is when he got the nickname "the fighting Parson". He spent 1 year in the prison dens of the South; being the 1st prisoner in the noted Libby Prison in Richmond, VA.
After the War, he spent one and one-half years serving in the American Missionary Assoc.
Prominent member of the David S. Cowles Post, G.A.R.
Married twice, leaves wife Frances Adams; daughters Mrs Bailey of Jamestown,NY;Mrs Daily and Ms. Sara at home; 2 sons Hiram McCrary and Samuel A.
