The town of Mansfield, Connecticut, settled in 1686, was originally called Ponde-Town, but was re-named after Major Moses Mansfield, who was an early settler and mayor of the town when it was incorporated in 1702. The Indian name for the town was "Noubesetuck."

He was a Major in the King Phillip's War, which is the highest Military rank of the time, he defeated the Indians, near the town of Mansfield, which is named after him. He was a member of of the General Court of Assembly, Judge of the Probate, and the County Court.

The son of Richard Mansfield, he married (1) Mercy Glover on May 5, 1664 in New Haven, and (2) Abigail Yale on Feb. 15, 1685/6 in New Haven. U.S., New England Marriages Prior to 1700, p. 486.
