Benjamin was a physician. He married Phebe Carpenter in Ferrisburg Township, Addison County or Montpelier, Addison County, on December 8, 1808.

My father's Taber family passes this story - "Benjamin Taber was a slender and frail man, twin brother of Joseph Taber. At age 15 in 1800, he went to a Friends boarding school at Nine Partners, Dutchess County, New York as a charity scholar, his parents being poor and unable to bear expenses. His father carried him about one half the distance from Montpelier to Nine Partners (over 200 miles). He walked the remaining distance alone. His scanty allowance of money was exhausted before he reached the end of his journey. He was compelled to dispose of his sleeve buttons to procure food. He remained at the boarding school for a number of years and studied medicine."

After his marriage to Phebe Carpenter, he settled in Starksboro, Addison County, just a bit farther up north from Lincoln where he practiced medicine. In 1817, they moved to Lincoln where he became the first physician living in that town and the only one for several years. It is said that Dr. Benjamin Taber was slim and tall; his height was past the median size. He rode through the countryside visiting patients for over 40 years until well past 60 years of age.

Their farm was about a mile north of the town center off what is now Quaker Road, named "Maple Grove." Maple sugar was one of their products of the farm.

I visited the farm in August 2003. The original house has been torn down and a more recent house stands East of the original. The original was near the place a garage stands now.

You can find three of his sons and several grandchildren buried in the Hesper Public Cemetery, Hesper, Winnisheik, Iowa – David, Russel and B. J. (Benjamin James) Taber. Some may be listed under Tabor.
