SOUTH BEND - Sarah Jane "Sally" Scandling, 82, passed away on
Saturday, March 7, 2009, at 8:22 a.m. in the Alterra Sterling House.
"Sally" to friends, "Sarah Jane and Janey" to family, she was born
February 5, 1927, in Fulton, IN, the daughter of Vernon and Pearl
(Wright) Bowen. The youngest of five children, she was sister to Esther
Plain (Munster, IN), former Indiana governor and U.S. Secretary of
H.H.S, Dr. Otis Bowen (Bremen, IN), Evelyn Amacher (deceased, 2007)
and Richard Bowen (deceased, 1991).

On June 20, 1970, Sally married Leland W.
"Lee" Scandling, who preceded her in death in 1998. They lived a happy life together
with their combined families including sons, Dr. Michael (Cindy) Marvin of North
Canton, OH, and daughter, Karen (Gary) Barth of Walkerton, IN; stepsons, David
(Ellie) Scandling of Fremont, CA, Darryl Scandling (deceased), Darwin (Patty)
Scandling of Las Vegas, NV, and Douglas (Deanna) Scandling of Kellery, TX. Sally is
also survived by grandchildren, Matthew Marvin, Rosemary Marvin, Jessica Barth,
Jacob Barth, Todd Scandling, Darla Damhorst, Chris Scandling, Laura (Jairo) Gomez
and Logan Scandling; plus many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Sally's
earliest years were spent in Fulton County. She attended schools in Fulton,
Francesville and Crown Point. She attended Crown Point High School except for her
senior year, graduating from East Chicago Roosevelt High School in 1945. After high
school, Sally went on to nursing school at the Memorial School of Nursing in South
Bend and graduated vice president of her class in 1949. She spent the remainder of
her life as a resident of South Bend working as a nurse in various capacities at her
alma mater. For several years (early 1970s), she was also a nursing instructor at Ivy
Tech in South Bend. Sally loved to travel and be with her friends until the adverse
effects of Parkinson's disease intervened. Sally was a member of the former American
Turners and bowled on several teams and leagues throughout the years. She loved
crafts and was always busy painting and sewing new projects for the many gifts she
gave away and periodically sold at craft sales. She was a member of Bethany
Evangelical Lutheran Church for more then 40 years, a place close to her heart.
