Early in the morning of May 2, 1865, 17-year-old Charles Tyler was cutting wood near the home of his uncle, Andrew Jewett. The Jewetts lived in Rapidan Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. That morning, a small party of Dakota Indians attacked the Jewetts, killing four. They also killed Charles Tyler.

The Dakota, who were frustrated with their situation for a variety of reasons, lashed out at the whites beginning on August 18, 1862. The main part of the uprising took place in 1862, with hundreds killed, but small Dakota raiding parties continued to periodically attack settlers living in Minnesota. So it was the morning of May 2, 1865, for Tyler and the Jewetts. A mixed-blood Dakota named John Campbell was taken into custody and hanged in Mankato by a group of whites on May 3, 1865. Charles sister, Eva (Harriet Evelyn Tyler), who had worked for the Jewetts, identified clothing worn by Campbell as belonging to the Jewetts.

Tyler and the Jewetts are buried close to one another in the Garden City Cemetery. There are several Tylers listed on Tylers gravestone, including his father, Moses, who died at age 45 on September 23, 1863 as a result of being kicked by a horse, and Charles brother Hubert, who died on October 13, 1859, at one year and 5 months. Charles inscription, which is in the middle, reads "Charles Tyler, May 2, 1865, Aged 17 Yrs."

Charles's story is related in "Dakota Uprising Victims: Gravestones & Stories," page 92, published by Curtis Dahlin in 2007.
