Charles Caldwell was born in Illinois, a son of John Henry Caldwell 1852-1900 and Mary Rutger Emmons 1860-1898. He had siblings Lawrence Henry 1880-1961, Henrietta "Etta" 1881-1905, Stella Mae 1884-1982, Benjamin Seymour 1887-1917, Grace Naomi 1889-1983 and Susie 1898-?.

His widower father and siblings lived in Bedford, Illinois in 1900 and were farmers.

Charles was a World War I Army veteran, serving in the Illinois Cpl. 1, Supply Tn. 1, from 1913-20. He was in the German occupation force for a year, coming home speaking German.

Charles married Etna VanFossen 1894-1965. They had children Mary Elma 1926-? and John Edward 1928-2002.

The family lived in Flora, Illinois where he worked for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad as a brakeman.

Squirrels, from the large trees in his yard, were one of his favorite foods.

Charles died in the Veterans Hospital in Marion, Illinois.

He was survived by his wife, Etna; son, John, Little Rock, Arkansas; daughter, Mrs. Mary (Dale) Derr, Tulsa, Oklahoma; sisters, Mrs. Grace (D. E.) Scott, Carlyle, Illinois and Mrs. Stella (Walter L. ) Billington, Cisne, Illinois.
