Deseret News Tuesday, February 11, 1997 Obituary

Murray's first homicide and officer-involved shooting of the year appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute and alcohol, police say.

Lawanna G. Tripp, 65, was shot to death by her husband, Blaine "Tom" Tripp, 67, Saturday evening after he got into an argument with his wife and a granddaughter living at their Murray home.Blaine Tripp, who police say had been drinking at the time, also shot his pregnant granddaughter, Brandy Tripp, 20, in the hand. He then went outside and was ordered by police to drop a .357 Magnum he was holding.

When he did not and turned toward three officers, Murray Police Sgt. Dave Marchant shot Tripp twice, killing him.

"Two officers and the sergeant went down the rear of the house, confronted Blaine and ordered him to stop and drop the gun," Lt. Pete Fondaco said. "When he refused, Dave yelled two more times to drop (the) weapon."

Tripp then turned toward officers "about 45 degrees," Fondaco said. Marchant fired three times at Tripp, who held the gun waist high with the barrel parallel to the ground.

Marchant has been placed on administrative leave pending an Salt Lake County district attorney's investigation and an internal review by Murray police.

Brandy Tripp was released from the hospital late Monday and is coping "as well as can be expected," Fondaco said.

Still, police don't know what motivated Tripp to shoot.

"We were looking at several possibilities, but there's no indication he made a threat," Fondaco said. "What caused him to go that far, to go over the edge, we don't know. But we know he and the granddaughter were involved in an argument and the grandmother separated the two before things got out of control."
