GU professor succumbs

The Rev. William J. Carney, 64, a longtime professor of philosophy at Gonzaga University, died in a Spokane hospital Sunday after a lingering illness.

He was born in Butte, Montana, where he completed his high school education before entering the Society of Jesus at Sheridan, Oregon, in 1931.

After three years at Mount St. Michael's Scholasticate, Father Carney was a mathematics instructor at Gonzaga University from 1938 to 1941.

He was then assigned to Alma College in Alma, California, for theological studies. he was ordained a priest in 1944.

Father Carney was then sent to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1950.

He has been associated with the GU philosophy department since 1950, although he spent one year at the Florence, Italy, branch of the school.

Survivors include a brother, Martin Carney, San Francisco, California, and three sisters, Mrs. Ann Hayden, Mrs. Kate McNabb and Mrs. Pat Patterson, all of Butte.

Rosary will be today at 7 p.m. at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Aloysius.

Burial will be in Mount St. Michael's Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hennessey Funeral Home.
