Death Notice, Thursday, 20 Jan 1927, "The Vermilion News" (Vermilion, Erie Co., OH)

JOHN W. WITTMER

Death entered the home of one of Vermilion's oldest citizens early Friday morning and took therefrom the husband, and father, Mr. John W. Wittmer, after an illness of several weeks.

Obituary

John W. Wittmer was born on January 15, 1843 on the old homestead in Vermilion, three doors north of the Exchange St. M. E. Church. He died on the morning of January 14,1927, the day preceding his 84th birthday.

In early youth the deceased moved to a farm at Brownhelm, where he spent the greater part of his life in the occupation of farming and fishing. On Oct. 5, 1909 he came to Vermilion with his family to the home he had built on Douglas Street;.

On August 27, 1865 he was united in marriage to Christina Hahn with whom he lived for over sixty-one years in unselfish devotion to each other in an ideal family life. Seven children were born to this union, of whom two sons and one daughter died in early childhood.

He leaves to mourn his death his beloved wife, three sons, George, Edward and Albert; one daughter, Vera; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren of Vermilion; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Hahn, Mrs. Amelia McClurg and Miss Julia Wittmer of Cleveland; other relatives, and a host of friends.

He was a devoted husband and father and an honored citizen of the community in which he lived. His entire life was marked by nobility of character and purpose. He was one of the staunch pillars of Methodism having been a life-long member of the German Methodist Church.

His faith in God never wavered, and his interest sympathy and service could always be counted on. He spent many a night sitting up with those who were ill, and many an hour in errands of helpfulness and cheer to others.

Such a kindly and helpful spirit endeared him, not only to his own, but to the entire community, and his passing is a great loss. He is at home with Jesus reunited with those who have gone on before, and awaiting the others he loved.

The funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from the Exchange St. M. E. Church, Rev. Glenn L. Tennell officiating. Interment was at the Brownhelm cemetery.
