KARL ROY SMITH
BROWNHELM TOWNSHIP -- Karl Roy Smith, 84, of Brownhelm Township, died Thursday, Dec. 21, 2006, at his home following a lengthy illness.
He was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Geneva. He was raised in Geneva and Ashtabula and graduated from Ashtabula High School. He had made his home in Brownhelm Township for the last 55 years.
Smith served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with one bronze star.
He worked more than 20 years for T.J. Hume Construction as a superintendent. During seasonal downtime, he worked for American Shipbuilding in Lorain as a ship fitter, as well as for Firelands Floors. After retiring, he opened his own business, Home Services.
He was a member of local SCOA, Country Road Good Sam Chapter 47 and the Brownhelm Township Board of Appeals. For several years he was the Brownhelm Township Santa Claus. He served as a Boy Scout leader for his sons. He enjoyed traveling, singing, camping and woodworking. He was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst, where he was deeply involved in church life. He was active with the choir and Cairo fellowship group, was a trustee and hand-crafted the church's altar items, including the baptismal fount and podium.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Elaine May Smith (nee Hamann); sons, George Smith of Huron and Charles Smith of Oregon, Ohio; daughter, Karel Schieferstein of Brownhelm Township; brother Ralph Smith of Vermilion; and nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lori Smith Omlor, in 1996; brothers Claude and Kenneth; sisters Mae, Janet and Laiola; half sister, Inez Bosley; and parents, Jake Udel and Laura Matilda Smith (nee Martz).
Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter United Church of Christ, 582 Church St., Amherst. The Rev. Mark Pemberton, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Brownhelm Cemetery, Brownhelm Township.
