Ora Mae (Wilson) Nabakowski remembers Grandma Naby (nee Justina Gringle) telling about coming to America in 1893. They sailed steerage. Her mother ran along the dock crying as the boat left, as she knew she would never see them again. Uncle William, Uncle August, Aunt Minnie and Aunt Bertha were all born in Germany. Aunt Bertha, who was a small baby, became sick on the boat and Grandma Naby feared that she would die and have to be buried at sea. They were only allowed to bring a few things with them in the way of furniture or possessions. It is assumed that they had been living in Surnpf, Germany, a small town of about 50 people. A larger town, Elyria was about ten miles away. After coming to Amherst, John Nabakowski was employed at the Cleveland Quarries Co. and the family lived on Elyria Avenue. Most of the time he walked to work.
He was buried 25 Apr 1931.
