J. Newton Holzhauer, 74, of 169 Harris St., a former design engineer at the National Tube Co., Lorain, for 49 and a half years, died today at 1:45 a.m. in Amherst Hospital after being ill only one day. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage Mr. Holzhauer was born in Amherst May 9, 1886, and had lived here all his life. He retired from the National Tube Company in 1954.
A member of the First Evangelical United Brethren Church, Mr. Holzhauer was a past master of Stonington Masonic Lodge 503 and had served as secretary of the lodge for 35 years. He was a member of Royal Arch Masons, and El Rey Grotto and was a charter member of Stone City Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. He received his 50-year pins in both the Masonic and Eastern Star Lodges.
Mr. Holzhauer also was a member of the Lorain Real Estate Board and the Outdoor Life Association. His wife, Christine, died in December 1956.
Survivors are a son, Ralph N. Holzhauer, Detroit; a daughter Mrs. John C. Brown, Cleveland; five grandchildren and a sister Mrs. Clayton J. Springer, Amherst. Friends will be received at the Garland Funeral Home after 7 p.m. today.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Gail Bergstresser will officiate. Burial will be in Brownhelm Cemetery. A Masonic memorial services will be held in the funeral home tomorrow at 8 p.m.
