Originally he started out working as a newspaper reporter.
He was inducted into the German army during World War II, and was a long distance trucker during his service. He was captured by the enemy, but even as a POW, he continued driving trucks for the enemy, until his release. After his release and discharge, he continued driving trucks as a civilian.
Josef was married to Elisabeth Weiler, daughter of Peter Weiler and Maria Berg of Niedermendig, kreis Mayen (near Koblenz).
For a while Josef and Elisabeth lived in Niedermendig, but eventually they moved to Duesseldorf, where Elisabeth died in 1971. Josef and Elisabeth had no children, but they had three nieces: Rosa Maria (Aust) Losee who was a daughter of Elisabeth's sister Anna Maria, Elfrieda (Weiler) Gemein who was a daughter of Elisabeth's sister Katharina (Kate), and Ilse (Weiler) Watrelot who was a daughter of Elisabeth's brother Jean. Josef also had several relatives in the Sauerland, including a brother Rudolf.
Shortly after his wife's death, Josef moved back to Niedermendig and rented an apartment from his niece Ilse.
Josef passed away in 1982 while visiting a friend in Duesseldorf.
