He was born in New Hope, N. M. and was the son of Birl A. and Rachel Cates Talley. He graduated from high school in Lula. He then enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II and later served during the Korean War. He received a bachelor's degree in math and science from East Central University in Ada and then his master's degree in math and science from the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He married Melissa Dickens on Dec. 20, 1947, in Wetumka, and he began his math teaching and coaching career in Stuart in 1950. He became the principal at Stuart, and then transferred to Moss, where he served as school superintendent until returning to the Stuart School System in 1966. He continued his teaching career and also coached the girls' basketball program at Stuart until retirement in 1987, after 37 years of total service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stuart where he taught the Men's Sunday School class. He also was a member of the Oklahoma and National Retired Teachers Association and the Thomas Breeding Buckley American Legion Post 0032 in Holdenville. He passed away at a local nursing center at the age of 85. Survivors include his wife, Melissa Talley, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Ronda Talley, of Stuart, and Larry and Connie Talley, of Oklahoma City. Also, four grandchildren and spouses, Selanie and Ben Hubbert, Decatur, Texas, Skyler and Ryan Davison, of Stuart, William and Amanda Talley, Denton, Texas, and Tracy and Krissie Talley, Ada, and seven great-grandchildren, Alec Whitfield, Jair Hubbert, Cale Davison, George Talley, Madison Talley, Hunter Talley and Melissa Talley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Birl and Rachel Talley; a son, Billy Talley; two brothers, Johnny Talley and Lawrence Talley, and a sister, Ruby Talley. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Stuart First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Brannon officiating, assisted by Bill San Millan. Burial will be at Pryor Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.
