After the children left home, Mary Elizabeth sold the farm and bought the "little red house" and some land in Woodleaf. She built a large house with a wrap-around porch at the corner of the crossroads. Steps flanked by stone lamp posts led up from the road to the walk. The house stood at the large intersection in Woodleaf, where the BP Convenience store now stands.
