Henry William Tisdale was born in Walpole, MA and was raised in West Dedham, MA, now Westwood, MA. Henry worked as a clerk at Benjamin Boyden's grocery market from 1855 to 1862.
In July of 1862 Henry enlisted in Company I, 35th Regiment, MA Volunteer Infantry and was given the rank of Sergeant. Henry was wounded in the thigh on September 14, 1862 at Fox's Gap, South Mountain, MD. After recovering, Henry was soldiering through Kentucky and Tennessee and later at the surrender of Vicksburg and Jackson, MS in July of 1863. After again soldiering through Kentucky and Tennessee Henry took part in General Grant's Overland Campaign in Virginia. On May 24th, 1864 Henry was captured at the Battle of North Anna River and survived four Rebel prisons, including Andersonville Prison in Georgia. In June of 1865 Henry was discharged from the army. Henry was recommended for the Medal of Honor, but never received it.
Henry married Abbie Cheney on June 3, 1868 and opened a market, Henry W. Tisdale & Company at 1800 and later at 2219 Washington Street, Roxbury, MA. They had seven children.
