Robert I. "Pete" Peterson, 83, of Wakarusa, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2009 due to complications from Alzheimer's Disease at a Topeka hospital. He was born on October 14, 1926 in Lincoln, the son of Ambrose I. and Charlotte Lynn Allen Peterson.

He was a Navy veteran of WWII, serving in the South Pacific. Pete resided in the Wakarusa community since 1960. He was employed by Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center for over 30 years before retiring in 1983 as Assistant Director of Radiology.

He was a member of the Wakarusa Presbyterian Church, the Wakarusa Masonic Lodge No. 402, AF&AM, the Arab Shrine and the Topeka Camera Club.

Pete married Audrey J. Holforty on July 17, 1949 in Hartford, KS. She survives.

Other survivors include three daughters, Carol Frazee, Laurie (Richard) Garcia, Susan (Robert) Breckenridge, seven grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Pete was preceded in death by one son, Kim I. Peterson.

Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Wakarusa Presbyterian Church.

Inurnment will follow in Shawnee Center Cemetery in Wakarusa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the organization of the donor's choice. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Lincoln Kansas and moved shortly after birth to Wellington, Kansas. Droped out of high school and joined the Navy 7/15/1943. If you notice on his military records it will say that he was born in 1925. He told me he lied about his age so he could join the Navy. He was acually 16 years old at the time of joining. After the Navy Robert moved back to Oklahoma City and finished high school. Graduated from Newman School of Nursing in Emporia Kansas. While going to college in Emporia to become a Registered Nurse he met and married Audrey June Peterson July 17, 1949. While living in Topeka Kansas they had 4 Children: Kim Ivan Peterson, Carol Ann Peterson, Laurie Lynn Peterson, Susan Kay Peterson. Robert retired from Stormont Vail Hospital as Assistant Director of Radiology after more then 30 years in 1983.
