Mr. Dorman Alford, age 86, of Austonio, passed away Sunday, October 31, 2004, at Houston Medical center, Veterans Hospital in Houston. Mr. Alford was born October 24, 1918, in Austonio. He came from a pioneering family who were part of Stephen F. Austin "old 300", coming to Texas in 1824. Mr. Alord attended Austonio High School and enlisted on Dec. 17, 1941 at the start of World War II and serving to the end of the war. Mr. Alford served in the headquarters, headquarters company, 8th Air Force, South Bomb group as a master sergeant. Mr. Alford participated in the Normandy Invasion, Ardennes Offensive and the invasion of the Rhineland, Berlin Germany.

After the war Mr. Alford moved to Houston and worked 37 years at U.S. Steel, as manager of the N.D.T. Department, Nuclear Division. Upon retirement he returned to Austonio, and served as president of the Austonio Community Center, a Director on the Board of Directors Consolidated Water Corporation, Deacon in the Austonio Baptist Church, Mr. Alford was also an active member in the Houston county Historical Commission, along with his wife

Mr. Alford was a member of the O.F.V.F.W Post 9300, the N.R.A., The Nuclear Workers Association and the 8th Air Force Association.

A sweet and loving man whose hobbies were fishing, gardening and reading history.

Survivors include [sons] W.D. Alford and wife Janice Alford, of Austin and Kenneth Alford, of Austonio; grandchildren Sandra L. Newton, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Jeffrey S. Alford and William Brian Alford, both of Austin and Jonathan Davidson, of Tulsa Okla.; great-grandchildren Katie Newton, Sarah Newton, Nathan Davidson and Kathryn Davidson; sisters-in-law Lois Alford and Lila Alford, both of Austonio; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Opal Christine Alford in 2000; and brothers Charles Alford, Harold Alford and Bill [William M.] Alford.

Funeral services for Mr. Dorman Alford were held Thursday, November 4, at Austonio Baptist Church with Pastor Charles E. Butler officiating, special music performed by Cherye Hyde, of Bryan and Nancy Bailey, of Austonio with favorite Poem read by W.D. Alford. Interment followed in the Creek Cemetery, with Air Force Honor Guard, followed by Taps.

Pallbearers were Lee Lundy, Tommy Lundy, Jeff Alford, Brian Alford, Bill Alford, Wendell Alford and J.W. LaRue.

Honorary Pallbearers were the Reverend Willard Watson, of Dyersburg, Tenn., Ray Watson, of Coosbay, Ore., E.L. Hess and Danny Campbell, both of Houston, John Davidson, of Tulsa, Okla. and Paul E. Barnhart, of Lufkin....

Gravesite Details

Year of birth is 1917 in SSDI and 1923 on gravestone. His father died in 1920, so 1923 is incorrect. He is age 21 on the 1940 census, has not been found in 1930, and in 1920 appears to be listed as Willie D., age 2-?/12.
