John Goodridge Matthews was my Grandfather. He and my Grandmother packed up and moved to New York, NY where my Father was born in 1919. Grandpa worked and retired from the New York Times and came back to Columbia. They built a nice cabin in the woods about 10 miles from Columbia. It was a wonderful place! We grew up going up on weekends as my Father(Gerald Holmes Matthews)worked to plant trees and flowers and keep the cabin up as well as he could. I was 3 when I met my Grandfather and he had a massive heart attack that same year (1957)and died. He had just finished his 'retirement cabin'. My Grandmother went back to New York and lived there another 50 years before her neighborhood got too rough. Daddy, Mama and Johnny (my baby brother) went up to get her and brought her back to Columbia where she lived until her death in 1980. She was the only Grandparent on either side of my parents, that I can remember and I cherished her. It was so wonderful to talk to her and hear her stories. I can not really remember my Grandfather, however; I do remember my Uncle Frank. One of his index fingers was cut off at the first knuckle and I remember him teasing us with it. Many laughs and giggles!!
