Fred Carlan was the son of Weldon Pike Carlan and Inez Coker Carlan.
Fred Edwin Carlan Sr. died Monday, Sept. 8, 2008, at the age of 82 in Lawrenceville, Ga., from complications of prostate cancer. Born April 12, 1926, in Homer, Ga., he was raised in Texas and Louisiana. He attended LSU and served in the Army Air Force at the end of World War II. He retired from Southern Railroad in 1979 after 30 years of service as a switchman. He then operated Carlan's Greenhouse and Nursery on Highway 61 in Crawfordville for 20 years before moving to Georgia in 2004. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Crawford Lodge 294 of the Masons, Wakulla Shrine Club, Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 1-3 and the Crawfordville Volunteer Fire Department. Always the first to volunteer, he was gregarious and friendly. When anyone needed help, they could always call on Fred. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. EDT Friday, Sept. 12, at Crawfordville United Methodist Church, with burial at Crawfordville Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife. Eleanor Carlan; son Ed Carlan (and wife Kathy); son Carey Carlan; and two grandchildren, Will and Hannah.
