Frank is the son of Frank Gilmore Byrd and Hannah Sue Gooch Byrd. He married Kaliopy Evangelo of Portsmouth, Virginia on 9 September 1946. They had four daughters and one son. He served as a cook in the US Army during World War II and spent the rest of his life as a chef. The family settled in Douglas, Georgia where he eventually passed away. Funeral services were held at the Chapel of Sims Funeral Home of Douglas on 4 October. Rev. B.D. Carter officiated. Survivors were his wife Kaliopy Evangelo Byrd; daughters; Dimitra Byrd Cunningham, Kitty Hufham, Peggy Byrd and Jackie Byrd; son Frank Gooch Byrd Jr.; sister Gladys Waskovitch of Atlanta; and 3 grandchildren. Active Pallbearers were: Dutch Mobley, J.C. Roberts, Al Waskovitch, Wilson Whaley, William Manard, and Don Bigelow. His obituary was published in The Douglas Enterprise newspaper dated 8 October, 1971.
