William Banning
The funeral of William Banning was held Thursday afternoon, April 10, from the home of his brother-in-law, Mr W.E. Scott, Elgin Street, to the Auld Kirk Cemetery vault. Mr Banning died suddenly on Tuesday, April 8th. He was 77 years of age having been born at Clayton, Ont., a son of the late Ozias Banning and his wife Catherine Coulter. Deceased was educated at the village school and at the Almonte High School and Belleville Business College. He operated a store at Clayton for a few years after which he spent 40 years in the West travelling for a leather goods firm with branches in Winnipeg and Brandon. Some 19 years ago his first wife, whose maiden name was Clara Barnett died and Mr Banning came East and lived for three years with his sister at Clayton, the late Mrs Bowland. He helped her with her store after which he bought a business of his own at Overbrook. After four years there he returned to Almonte and lived retired until the time of his death. He is survived by his second wife the former Adie Scott whom he married nine years ago. Services were conducted by Rev J.J. Lowe of the Anglican Church and interment was made in the Auld Kirk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Messrs Wilbert Halpenny, Clayton; Banning Stewart of Ottawa; Herb Coxford, Almonte; Morley Alexander, Renfrew; Bert Young, Ramsay and Wm J. Barker of Moosomin, Sask. Among the floral offerings was one from the Granite Chapter Almonte.
