In 1850, he was living with and/or working for merchant Philip K. Brenneman in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, he was a salesman presumably still residing in Lancaster but is not found in that census with any certainty.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at an unrecorded age in Philadelphia August 10, 1861, and mustered into federal service that day as a sergeant with Co. E, 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded at the battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, likely during fighting in the West Woods, he died in a military hospital. The company register erroneously claims he died in 1863.

On September 26, 1866, his mother applied for a mother's pension and received it, but no alphabetic pension index was found that would reveal her first name.
