Longtime Alaskan Glen O. Rhodes, 82, died Feb. 23, 2000, from Parkinson's disease complications at the Anchorage Pioneers' Home. Friends and relatives were invited to attend an open house at the home of his daughter, Glenda Rhodes, Anchorage.

Mr. Rhodes was born May 23, 1917, in Heglan, Idaho, and moved to Oregon as a young boy. His family settled at Bellfountain and Alpine, Ore. He graduated from high school in Monroe, Ore., in 1936, and worked in logging woods and sawmills, becoming a sawyer during World War II. Mr. Rhodes co-owned a sawmill on the Oregon coast for eight years, then shipped the mill to Anchorage in 1955. In Alaska, he owned Bird Creek Sawmill on Turnagain Arm with his father-in-law. After selling the sawmill, he found employment with the Anchorage School District, where he worked for more than 20 years at the school bus garage, retiring as foreman. He drove over the Alaska Highway many times, delivering school buses to Anchorage. His life spanned the Depression and World War II, and in Alaska, he witnessed statehood, the 1964 earthquake and the pipeline construction. He traveled in and out of Alaska and overseas in the Pacific frequently.

Mr. Rhodes leaves his wife of 59 years, Doris Rhodes; daughters, Glenda Rhodes of Anchorage and Dr. Karen Sue Rhodes of Palmenston North, New Zealand; son, Mark Rhodes; the spouses of his three children; grandsons, Evan and Neil Rhodes of Anchorage; and brothers, Leslie, Chas J. and Howard Rhodes of Oregon and California. Arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel downtown.
