ROBERT JAMES GNAGY
Robert James Gnagy , 76, of Amherst, died Sunday at his home after a long illness. Born in Urichsville, he was raised there, but lived in Amherst since 1948. Mr .Gnagy owned his own heavy equipment company, Gnagy Trucking, for the last 50 years.
During World War II, he served in the Army in the European Theater. He received an American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with a Bronze Star, a Good Conduct medal and a World War II Victory medal. In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling.
In his later years, he enjoyed relaxing on the bench in his front yard watching trains and commuters go by. Gnagy Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Patricia (nee LaCourse); daughters Charlotte Martinez of Bay Town, Texas, Cynthia Gnagy of Amherst and Linda Lopaz of Highlands, Texas; a son, Jeff Koepke of Perry; many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; brothers Laverne Gnagy of Leesville, Ohio; and Paul Gnagy of Amherst; and a sister, Opal Parrish of Newcomerstown.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Christine Brown; his parents, Charles and Ava Gnagy; brothers Elmer, Samuel, George and Richard Gnagy; stepbrothers Pat, Mike, James and John Dillon; a sister, Grace Gnagy; and a stepsister, Myrtle Dillon.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, where services will be 1 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Amherst. Military honors will be provided by Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to New Life Hospice, 5255 N. Abbe Road, Elyria 44035.
