-A retired farmer, Earl Willims, succumbed to a long illness May 1, 1983 at the Stevens County Hospital. Born April 24, 1895, Williams came to Hugoton from his birth place, Harrison County, Mo., at the age of three. He was the son of William H. Williams and the former Harriett T. Willis. During World War I Williams served with the Heavy Artillary in France. He was a member of the VFW and the Church of Christ in Hugoton. On January 1, 1924, Williams exchanged wedding vows with Hazel Crandell in Hugoton. After less than a year of married life, his bride died August 13, 1924. In June of 1965 Williams married Vida Porter. She also preceded him in death in February of 1969. A son, Earl Jr., also died before him. Survivors included two sisters, Pearl Pollard of Aline, Ok. and Josephine Hibbs of Chanute, and several nieces and newphews. Lloyd Topliss led the funeral services arranged by Phillips Funeral Home. Mourners gathered at the First Christian Church Wednesday, May 4 1983 at 2:00 p.m. A military graveside service was conducted at the Hugoton Cemetery with two honorary pallbearers, Clifford Williams and Duane Williams. Pallbearers were Mike Willis, Kenneth Williams, Michael Williams, Don Williams, Lowell Williams, and Darrell Williams. The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Pioneer Manor Nursing Home or the Church of Christ.
