Rev. Lewis Rogers
(November 23, 1918 - March 6, 2009)

Reverend Lewis Rogers
The Reverend Lewis Rogers went to be with his Savior and Lord, Friday, March 6, 2009 in his home.

He was the founder, senior pastor, and charter member of the House of Prayer Church, 3414 E. Highway 98. He is loved and respected by his fellow ministers, his congregation, and family.

Lewis Rogers was born in Wausau, Florida, to Daniel Allen "Buster" and Mollie Grantham Rogers, November 23, 1918.

His parents and two oldest brothers (Allen and Arthur) preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his first wife, Wilma Haddock Rogers, after nearly 64 years of marriage. She was his loving and caring partner who adored her husband and worked side by side with him in his ministry.

The Reverend Rogers is survived by his present wife, Nancy Ward Rogers. He and Nancy loved each other very deeply. He never wanted her out of his sight or touch. He is also survived by his daughter, Lunell, and her husband, Sam Clark. Lunell was his hunting and fishing buddy, his "school teacher" girl, and his church pianist for over 50 years. He is survived by three brothers: Clark (Myrtle) of Vernon and Leo of Wausau; Howard (Paulette) of Port St. Joe; a sister, Marvell Taylor; and a sister-in-law, Mennie Rogers of Wausau. He is further survived by Nancy's family: James (Donna Gail), John (Rita) and son John, Nancy Jane (Mike) and sons, James Eathan McGuinty and Michael Scott.

He was an avid and excellent freshwater fisherman; one of the best anywhere. There is a slough, "Preacher's Slough", off White River named after him. He was also an effective fisher of men.

He became a Christian, May 12, 1939, began his ministry in October, 1940, and was ordained October 15, 1943. He became a member of the International Ministerial Association June, 1956 and served as a Florida presbyter for 12 years. He was a long time member of the Full Gospel Business Men's International.

He preached from New Mexico to Georgia as well as in Jamaica and Haiti. Churches he served include: Old Union, Perch Pond, Gap Pond Free Will Baptist, Bonnett Pond, Wausau House of Prayer Church, and the House of Prayer Church in Bay County. He had a radio ministry live from the church for 12 years and one in Port St. Joe. He ministered weekly at a cottage prayer meeting for 23 years.

He was a well-learned, self-educated man with tremendous knowledge of the Scriptures. He preached without script. He sometimes incorporated as many as a half-dozen scriptures into a sermon citing book, chapter, and verse and quoting the entire text from memory. Every sermon preached was Biblical, succinct, timely, and heavily anointed of God. Every sermon had a bit of humor injected into it.

He fully exemplified the words "husband", "father", "friend", "Christian", and "pastor". He exuded the fruit of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit operated through him.

He has befriended thousands. He gave a great percentage of all his resources to the church and to other people. He went the extra mile when there was nothing in it for him. He gave and sacrificed to and for others with no concern for himself. He exhibited unconditional compassion and love as a pastor, friend, and a loving and nurturing husband and father.

He sat daily with his beloved Bible opened over his heart and meditated upon its cherished scriptures. He often said, "He gave me my first breath, I'll give Him my last."

He presented his body as a living sacrifice; he fought a good fight, he kept the faith and has now finished his course. He is now ready to live in his new home.

We are forever grateful to the long-term professional care given to him over the years by Drs. Scott Dean, Vickie Harrell, Dennis Healey and Covenant Hospice.

Those desiring may offer memorials in the name of Rev. Lewis Rogers to the House of Prayer Church, P.O. Box 3071, Panama City, FL 32401, the Gideon Society International, P.O. Box 685, Panama City, FL 32402 or a charity of choice.
