Son of John Rutherford Bechtel (1876-1957) & Bertha May Sheldon (1881-1964), Wilmer married Gertrude Louise Cody (1909-1986) on 11 Aug 1940. Two children, Bruce & Anita, survive. Twin boys were born & died 12 Dec 1942. Wilmer was a one-room elementary school teacher, a high school science teacher, a superintendent, & a professor of elementary education at Lake Erie College. Wilmer was also a genealogist, doing extensive work on his Sheldon & other lines. His Tharp-Sheldon Family Tree provides extensive listings of the descendants of Thomas Sheldon (1789-1871) & Huldah Tharp (1790-1853), particularly of the Willam Sheldon (1816-1902) & Thomas J. Sheldon (1828-1922) branches up until the mid 1990s.
