Roman Emperor. He was born in 32 AD into a noble Etruscan family, and in early life developed a reputation as one of the Emperor Nero's most extravagant young companions. In 58 AD his friendship with Nero ended when his wife, Poppea Sabina, divorced him to marry the Emperor and he was exiled to the province of Lusitania, where he remained for ten years. In 68 AD he joined Galba in his revolt against Nero, hoping to one day succeed him as Emperor. When Galba instead adopted Lucius Calpurnius Piso Licinianus, he paid for the support of members of the Praetorian Guard, who declared him Emperor and murdered Galba. He was immediately accepted as Emperor by the Senate. He exploited the popularity of Nero, taking his name as one of his own, restoring his statues and reinstating his freedmen and household officers. During the short reign of Galba the legions in Germania had declared Vittelius as Emperor, and they were now advancing on Rome. The decisive battle took place near Cremona, and Otho's army was forced into retreat. Although still in command of a strong army, he took responsibility for the defeat and, after declaring "it is far more just to perish one for all, than many for one", he retired to his tent where he committed suicide the next morning. He was cremated, and his ashes were interred in a simple tomb at Brixellum.
