Joseph Patton was born on Dec. 8, 1839 in Fleming Co., KY to parents Andrew Dunlap Patton (1806-1869) and Nancy Melinda Cowan (1806-1885). He was a brother of David Henry (1837-1914) and Luther H. (1846-1865), who both served in Co. H, 38TH IND INF. Joseph had four other siblings: John Robert (1835-1841) and sisters Jane, Martha, and Mary.
Joseph enlisted in Co. H, 38TH IND INF with his older brother David on Sept. 18, 1861. He served temporarily as a post-Battle of Perryville hospital steward in Oct. 1862. Nearly a year later, in Sept. 1863, Patton was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga. At one point during his service with the 38TH IND INF, he declined an offered commission in a U.S.C.T. reg’t. He was promoted to CAPT of Co. B on May 7, 1865 and served in that role until the regiment mustered out on July 15, 1865. Patton applied for a federal veteran’s pension on Dec. 20, 1871 (app. #171,065; cert. #125,034).
On Oct. 16, 1877, the 37-year-old Patton married Miss Josephine W. Sherwood. Together, they had three children: sons Clifford Sherwood (1878-1944; locomotive engineer), Howard Wadsworth (1881-1941), and William Andrew (b. 1883). Josephine died sometime between 1883 and 1890, as Joseph remarried to Emily Estelle Dunlap (1858-1933) on June 4, 1890 in Cincinnati, OH. They had two children: Emily Estelle (1891-1892) and Mary Dunlap (1893-1978). Joseph moved his family to Woodward, OK in the early 1890s where his brother David had established a cattle ranch. Patton passed away at age 72 on Mar. 3, 1912 and is buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Woodward, Woodward County, OK. His widow Emily applied for a pension on Apr. 27, 1912 (app. #985,427; cert. #748,991).
