John Norman Howell, 78, of Hedgesville, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at his home.

Born March 22, 1930, in Louisa, Ky., he was the son of the late Halsey and Nancy Louise Akers Howell.

He was a coal miner for 43 years in Boone County, W.Va., for Westmoreland Coal Co.

He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. He served during the Korean War.

He attended Grace United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the VFW of Madison, W.Va., and United Mine Workers of America.

He is survived by his wife, Nelda Lee Hager Howell; one son, John L. Howell of Hedgesville; one sister, Jean Henry of Fort Myers, Fla.; two brothers, Howard Howell of Canton, Ohio, and William Howell of Chapmansville, W.Va.; and one granddaughter.

Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Sleepy Creek, W.Va., with military graveside honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard. The Rev. Daniel Montague will officiate.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 122 Waverly Court, Martinsburg, WV 25401.
