Peyton Randolph was the son of Leroy Kennedy and
Ellender Newberry of Alabama and was born in that
state. Leroy was an Alabama state representative
in 1849 and 1851 for the Marion County area. He
was a tanner by trade and also was a judge in the
probate court.

Peyton Kennedy was actually in the 8th Texas Cavalry rather than the 7th as shown on his headstone. He was killed in or just before the battle of Waynesboro during General William Tecumsah Sherman's March to the Sea in November 1864. This is verified by Confederate Civil War records.
