Illinois legislator, whose crusade against prostitution and gambling as Sangamon County state's attorney helped clean up postwar Springfield.

Mr. Coutrakon served two terms as Sangamon County state's attorney from 1948-1956. He also served eight years in the General Assembly before he was elected circuit judge in the 7th Judicial Circuit. He retired from the bench in 1977.

Mr. Coutrakon also opened a grand jury probe that culminated with state Auditor Orville Hodge's conviction for embezzling nearly $1.5 million in state money.

George Peter Coutrakon, 93, of Redlands, Calif., a retired judge formerly of Springfield, died Sunday, Dec. 12, 1999, in Redlands, Calif.

He was born Nov. 20, 1906, in Springfield, the son of Peter and Isabelle Hattoon Coutrakon. He married Phyllis B.; she preceded him in death in 1998.

Mr. Coutrakon graduated from the law school at University of Illinois in 1931 and practiced law in Springfield, leaving to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1948 he was elected state's attorney in Sangamon County, returning to private practice in 1956 while beginning his first term as a state representative. After serving eight years in the legislature, he was elected circuit court judge in the Seventh District, remaining on the bench until his retirement in 1979.

Survivors: a son, George B. Coutrakon of Redlands, Calif.; and a brother, Basil H. Coutrakon of Springfield.
