Picola Mae Gumz (1923-2010)

Picola Mae Gumz, 87, a 70-year resident of the Barstow, Calif., area, passed away Sept. 20, 2010, in Barstow. She was born July 8, 1923, in Hollis, Okla., to proud parents, Wylie and Willie Kellison Carter.
She graduated from Barstow High School in 1941, and had worked as a waitress in the area for 25 years. She met and married Arthur Gumz in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1942. They moved to Newberry Springs and raised four children on their
chicken ranch. Art passed away in 1974. Their daughter, Frances Gumz Hodkin, passed away in 2007.
Picola passed away peacefully at Rimrock Convalescent Hospital with the great staff and hospice nurses who took great care of her. We will miss our crazy granny and
beloved mother. Picola is survived by sons, Glen (Sally) Gumz, of Arizona, Bob (Bev) Gumz, of Barstow, and Victor (Pat) Gumz, also of Barstow; a sister, Gertrude "Trudy" Slusser, of Barstow; 16 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and numerous
nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at 10 a.m., at Mt. View Memorial Park, Barstow. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Visiting Nurse Association of Inland Counties, Barstow Home Health and Hospice Services, 42-600 Cook St., Suite 202, Palm Desert, CA., 92211. Arrangements by Mead Mortuary, 760-256-5671.
