Enlisted 8 January 1872 in the 7th U. S. Cavalry. At the time of the Battle of the Little Big Horn he was a private in Thomas Mower McDougall's Company B. Company B was the pack train escort/guard, but once they got up to Reno Hill, they fought the remainder of the battle with Reno, Benteen and Weir.
