Mary Ellen Hackney was born on 5 May 1854 in Grayson County, Texas to Francis Newton Hackney and Matilda Adeline (Deaver) Hackney and was one of eight children.

Sometime before 1860, her parents moved to Gainesville in Cooke County, Texas, about 17 miles west of Collinsville, as we find them in the 29 June 1860 Census. Mary is listed as age 6.

Not long after the 1860 Census, her parents moved the family back to Grayson County, Texas, where on 19 March 1870, Mary’s Father, Francis Newton Hackney dies, at age 48. He is buried in what is now known as the Tuck Cemetery. It is located on private property off Old Center Church Road. It may have been a cemetery at one time, but now it’s a few gravestones scattered throughout the forest of trees.

When the 1870 Census is taken in McComb, Grayson County, Texas, on 7 Nov 1870, her Mother Matilda is listed with her children, ages 2 to 19. Mary is listed as age 18, which would make Mary’s birth year in 1852, but her older sister Elizabeth was born that year, so I believe the age of Mary on this 1870 Census is incorrect. Also listed in the 1870 Census and on the same page as Mary Hackney is a 22 year boy named George Washington Tuck, who is living at home with his parents.

Mary and George must have known each other, since they lived so close and probably dated in a horse and buggy. They married on 29 Sept 1872 in Grayson County. A little over a year later, their first child, Thomas Washington Tuck, was born on 5 Aug 1873 and another son, Samuel Lee Tuck was born on 2 Sept 1877.

In 1879, Mary lost her Mother, Matilda Deaver Hackney, who was only 46 years of age. Matilda left behind six unmarried children, ages 11 to 23. Mary’s Father had died seven years earlier, so these children had to band together as a household and support and take care of each other.

In 1879, Mary and George moved to Wise County, Texas, where a son, Robert Ewen Tuck is born on 23 Feb 1880. By May of that same year, they have moved to Hood County, Texas, where they are found on the 11 June 1880 Census.

Around Jan 1881, the family makes another move, which takes them to Parker County, Texas. While in Parker County, a son Albert Jefferson Tuck is born on 14 April 1881.

I guess after all their travels, they decide to move back home to Grayson County, because that is where another son, David Grant Tuck is born on 14 May 1882. Over the next few years, Mary and George will add to their family. Their son Stephen S. Tuck would be born in Jan 1885. Their first daughter, Rebecca Susan Tuck is born on 20 March 1886 and their last child, a daughter, Georgia Florence Tuck is born in Jan 1889.

Life is long and hard back in the 1800’s and many people die young and Mary was one of them. At age 44, on 9 Sept 1898, Mary died. She leaves behind several children, ranging in age from 7 to 25. She is buried in the Tuck Cemetery, the same cemetery where her Father was buried in 1870. Her gravestone is old and hard to read. It has been broken into two pieces, maybe by weather or maybe by vandals. She is buried close to her Father-in-law and Mother-in-law, Thomas Jefferson Tuck, Sr. and Rebecca Cox Tuck. Mary’s husband, George Washington Tuck lived to be 78 years of age and is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Wichita Falls, Wichita County, Texas in Block U, Space 290 in an unmarked grave.
