Rebecca grew up in Perry County, Pennsylvania. Her father Thomas was a weaver. Rebecca's daughter Emma Ann wrote a charming memoir with family stories from Pennsylvania, places her parents had moved, with vignettes and stories of family members, including her grandfather Thomas Boyd who lived with them in advanced age and she a little girl.

One story stands out regarding Rebecca and her father Thomas, who grand daughter Emma thought grouchy and unapproachable and furthermore didn't like her kitties. Rebecca intervened to explain that grandfather was tired, had been a good father and very patient husband to their grandmother Susannah who had a rather prickly side.

Rebecca and William moved quite a bit in their married life: Johnstown, Pa.; Crawford County, Oh.; Angola, In.; Daviess County, Mo; finally ending up on a farm outside Linn, Kansas where they lived the rest of their lives.

Linn was the center for the meeting and marriages between the Shatto, Troup, Boyer and other families, many of whom migrated to the west coast in the early to mid 1890's. Many of Rebecca's children, their aunts, uncles and cousins ended up together in towns in Oregon and California.
