John was a telegraph operator and station agent employed by the Wabash Railroad and was located from time to time in Clark, Missouri. He also was stationed at various times in Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a fine vocalist, a leader of the church choir and an uncompromising anti-saloon man.
He was a republican. On account of failing health, he left
the railroad service and moved to a farm near Canon City, Colorado where he died, leaving his wife, Arrabella, and his four young children.
