Formerly of Mount Joy, Kay was a homemaker and also owned and operated the former Williams Market with her late husband on W. Main St. in Mount Joy for several years. Known for their seafood, the business was sold to Nolt's Seafood, which eventually became Simplee Seafood of Mount Joy. Previously she worked for the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, the Marietta Depot, and the Lancaster Newspapers. Kay, known as Kitty in high school, was a 1945 graduate of the former Mount Joy High School. A life member of Fire Department Mount Joy, Kay was an instrumental part of the Department's bingo program for many years. In 1997, the Department presented her with the "Outstanding Service Award for Dedicated Support." Kay was the first woman ever to receive this award. A passionate bingo enthusiast, she and her friends played several times a week supporting area fire companies. Kay was also an excellent cook, baker, and enjoyed embroidery and playing pinochle. Above all, Kay loved spending time with her family.
Born in Millersville, she was the daughter of the late Roy H. and Dorothy S. Simmons Hess.
Kay will be dearly missed by her children, Leroy E. married to Sherry Wolgemuth Williams, Landisville and Susan Williams-Patton married to John Patton, Lancaster; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two step-granddaughters and one step-great granddaughter; and a brother, Frank Hess, Lancaster. Two brothers, Earl and Lee Hess, preceded her in death.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Sheetz Funeral Home, Inc., 16 E. Main St., Mount Joy on Friday, March 6, 2009 at 10 a.m. with Reverend David E. Woolverton officiating. Interment to follow in Mount Joy Cemetery. Friends may call at the Funeral Home on Friday from 9 until 10 a.m. Memorial contributions in Kay's name may be made to Fire Department Mount Joy, 111 New Haven St., Mount Joy, PA 17552.
