PHILLIPS, LINDSAY – "Sheriff Refuses To Name Killer of Phillips". Lindsay Phillips, 50, Falls with 16 Shot Gun Wounds. Sheriff Eye Witness But Refuses To Talk. Duty of Sheriff to Name Guilty Party and Particulars." Lindsay Phillips, 50, state game warden, was killed in a road house south of Helenwood Sunday, in the presence of Sheriff Herbert C. Bilbrey, against whom he has sworn out a warrant charging him violation of the state game laws. Dorsey Rosser and Ralph Haralson were jailed shortly afterward, charged with the shooting. Asked who actually fired the shots which killed Phillips, Sheriff Bilbrey declined to answer, saying only that he would "tell who did it" when court convenes. Seems like that is a rather long time to make a public statement of interest to the public. The shooting occurred about 2:30 p.m. in the roadhouse operated by Haralson, two miles north of New River, on the main highway. Sheriff Bilbrey said that Phillips started to draw his revolver, but that the shots that killed him rang out before he had time to pull the trigger of his own gun. One witness said that Phillips did not succeed in getting his revolver from his pocket. Others present at the time of the shooting were Manford Sexton, circuit court clerk, and Lee Shoopman. Sixteen gunshots were found in Phillips body. Phillips was a farmer and lumber man. He lived near Helenwood. (Source: Scott County News, 10 Jul 1936, p1)
