Born June 4, 1918 in Gaston County, NC, he was the son of the late Dewitt Hayworth and Ethel Chaney Hayworth.
Mr. Chaney was a graduate of Boyden High School. A veteran of the U.S. Army, during World War II, he retired from Salisbury Fire Department, after 20 years of service.
A life member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, he was a Sunday School secretary for 35 years, deacon emeritus, a member of church property committee, senior adult choir and sanctuary choir. He was also a volunteer at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Preceding him in death were his birth parents, Walter C. Chaney and Hester Anthony Chaney; and two sisters, Flora H. Miller and Juanita H. Sasser.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Grubb Chaney, whom he married June 4, 1938; daughter, Patricia Chaney Proctor of Statesville; brothers, J. Van Hayworth (Ann), Wayne Hayworth (Loretta), all of Salisbury, and Frank Hayworth (Norma) of Concord; sister, Debbie Hayworth Sutton of Salisbury; grandchildren, Dean Chaney Proctor (Alisha), Linda Proctor Thompson (Wesley); great-granddaughters, Keely Proctor and Katie Thompson.
Visitation: 6-8:00 PM – Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Lyerly Funeral Home.
Service: 2:00 PM – Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, where he will lie in-state for 30 minutes before the service. The Rev. Charlie Bryan and the Rev. Ron Touchton will officiate. Burial will follow at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, with graveside rites conducted by Salisbury Fire Department.
