EDITH HALE

The funeral will be held June 12 for Edith Marie Hale of Canyonville, who died June 7 of age-related causes. The former Noti resident was 93.

Hale was born Nov. 16, 1904, in Eugene to James and Harriet McCall Brabham. She married Farmer Hale in Eugene on Sept. 20, 1925. He died Dec. 5, 1985.

She attended Willakenzie School and graduated from Eugene High School. She taught at Elk Prairie School, a one-room schoolhouse in Noti.

Hale was a member of the Noti Church of Christ, Elk Prairie Thimble Club and the Noti Garden Club. She also served as past noble grand of the Rebekahs Lodge in Elmira. She enjoyed sewing and cooking, and her family remembers her as an excellent cook who spent many hours of her life in the kitchen.

Survivors include three daughters, Jean Olsen and JoAnne Johnson, both of Myrtle Creek, and Janet Barnes of Coos Bay; a son, Jim of Eugene; 13 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Two grandchildren, Richard and Brenda Smalley, and a great-grandchild Zane Hartel, died previously.

Friday's service will be at 11 a.m. at Noti Church of Christ, with burial at Sailor Cemetery in Noti. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association-Cascade Coast Chapter. ~~END~~

Edith Marie Hale, 93, formerly of Noti passed away following a long illness at Canyonville Sunday, June 7, 1998. She was born in Eugene, Oregon on November 16, 1904 to James Henry and Harriet Amerta (McCall) Brabham. The Brabham family emigrated from Kansas to Oregon in 1888 and settled on Deadman's Ferry Road on the McKenzie River, NE of Eugene. Edith attended Willakenzie School and graduated from Eugene High School. She taught all eight grades (1924-25) at the Elk Prairie one-room school, where she met and married Farmer Calvin Hale, chairman of the school board, on September 20, 1925. They celebrated 60 years of marriage just prior to his death on December 5, 1985. She is survived by four children, Jean and Harold Olsen, JoAnne and Don Johnson of Myrtle Creek, Janet and Don Barnes of Coos Bay, and Jim and Elna Loa Hale of Eugene; 13 grandchildren, Larry Olsen of Jasper, Kathryn (Olsen) Hartel of Gresham, Dan Olsen of Junction City, Randy Olsen of Gig Harbor, WA, Valerie (Johnson) Eves of Lake Oswego, Rod Johnson of Roseburg, Jodi (Johnson) Westbrooks of Myrtle Creek, Sandra (Smalley) DeGarlais of North Bend, Brad, Joe and Shannon Smalley of Portland, Joshuya Hale, Byuh, Laie, Hawaii, and Ben Hale of Eugene; 24 great-grandchildren; Brian Olsen of Corvallis, Leslie (Olsen) Duncan of Jasper, Carla Hinrichs of Albany, Jake Hartel of Gresham, Kelly, Eric, Aaron and Amanda Olsen of Junction City, Ryan and Sarah Olsen of Gig Harbor, WA, Katherine Eves of Lake Oswego, Jessica, Kristie and Jake Johnson of Roseburg, Kyle and Karlie Westbrooks of Myrtle Creek, Jeanette (Smalley) Hoeffner, Ulyllis, Kansas, Amy and Kay DeGarlaias of North Bend, Jesse and Cami Jo Smalley of Portland, Blake Smalley of Portland; and one great-great-grandchild, Aurora Brynne Duncan of Jasper. Preceding her in death were two grandchildren, Richard and Brenda Smalley, and one great-great-grandchild, Zane Hartel. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Arthur, Robert and Thomas Ray and one sister, Millie Brabham McPherson.

Edith was a loving wife and a wonderful, devoted mother, an excellent cook, spending countless hours of her life in the kitchen on the farm. She was a member of the Noti Church of Christ, Elk Prairie Thimble Club, Noti Garden Club and was a past Noble Grand of the Elmira Rebekah Lodge.

Musgrove Family Mortuary was in charge of arrangements. Services were held Friday, June 12, 15 11:00 a.m. at the Noti Church of Christ. Burial was at the Sailor Cemetery, Hwy 126, just east of Noti.

Contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Cascade Coast Chapter.
