Chauncey was the son of Ebenezer and Sarah (Hattabough) Patrick, the eldest child in a family of nine children. He lived with his parents until fourteen years of age, when he began learning the carpenter's trade in Salem, Ind. He followed his trade there until 1843, when he moved to Bainbridge, Ind. Chauncey married Mahala Flora Howe, daughter of Thomas Howe, 6 Aug 1856 in Spencer.

He resigned Company I, 19th Infantry Regiment Indiana on 09 August 1864 . He was wounded in the Battle of South Mountain, MD, and again at Gettysburg.
