Shortly after discharge from the U.S.Army he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1901.He retired with thirty years of active duty December 1, 1931. Records show that he served nearly his entire career at sea, serving on a variety of battleships. From 1914-1917 he was in the submarine service. He retired from the service as a Chief Gunners Mate.
His physical description was: 5'11"- 3/4" tall, weight-157 lbs.
A brother, Tosten, recalls that Hans was the first South Dakotan to enlist in the U.S.Navy.
